monkeyflower- (Mimulus rattanii ssp. decurtatus) – Santa Cruz monkeyflower is an annual plant in the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae). It produces short (3-5cm) flower stalks that have one to four pink flowers with yellow striped throats. Santa Cruz monkeyflower is endemic to sandy soils of Santa Cruz County, and occurs in the Zayante Sandhills—a unique community of plants and animals found only on sandy soils of the Zayante series. It is found primarily in the gaps between shrubs and trees in the sandhills chaparral communities, which support a diverse assemblage of herbaceous native plants. Due to its limited geographic range and narrow habitat specificity, the Santa Cruz monkeyflower has been included on the California Native Plant Societies ‘watch list’ (List 4). |
